Born and raised in New York City, Ira Craig has always been proximate to the arts and art making. They solidified their commitment to developing an artistic practice as a student at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, later going on to complete the dual enrollment program between Tufts University and the School at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. SMFA’s concept-forward open curriculum allowed them to explore every avenue of curiosity with support and room for failure.

Ira enjoys working with themes of the human body, whether that be concretely or in concept only. They ask questions like What does it mean to have a body? What is the difference between history and memory? Does the meaning of work reside in the working or in the final result?

Across a range of genres and media, Ira asks the viewer to interrogate preconceptions of gender, personhood, and regularity/defaulthood. There is not a ‘correct’ mode of perception presented; rather, a plethora of possible interpretations with emphasis on nuance and condition.

When not lost in thought or scribbling in journals, Ira enjoys the feeling of sunlight, throwing dinner parties, and biking around Philadelphia.
